< Living City, Art of Life > is an exhibition of local research in Damyang, designed to experiment with the implications and possibilities of artistic research, a major creative methodology in modern art. Research generally involves a pre-survey or data collection prior to academic research or work on a subject, but artistic research is in reference to an artistic practice, not just as a methodology of investigation. Thus, < Living City, Art of Life > has sought to present Damyang in various perspectives with locality-focused artistic research and interpretations.

The artistic research was conducted primarily through the Damyang Cultural Center with data on general history, culture, and lifestyle of Damyang, and the preparation for the main exhibition has begun with the addition of artists' views against this backdrop.

The six participating artists attempted to take a fresh look at Damyang, exploring the subject of interest in different perspectives and methods. The challenge of being an artist and a researcher starts with the unfamiliar confusion and obsession as a process of exploring unknown information or the new understanding of a concept. However, the process led to the production and visualization of non-materials through all the activities that Damyang is inspired by or stays in a certain state of mind by looking at environmental factors, issues of the times, history, and culture.

Work through artistic research is an exploration of how it will be expressed by artists, what work effects it will have on artists, and an attempt to apply it to the artistic basis of life in practice.

Unlike general research, it is to reemphasize the importance of diversifying perspectives by looking at the way each artist understands the different methods and results with their perspectives and a variety of visual outcomes that came out from different interpretations.

Inspired by the historical and fictional background of the ritual for rain at Yongso, in the research stage the artist collected images along the river that runs through Damyang from Yongso, known as the origin of the Yeongsan River.

From Yongso throughout the Buntong Bridge, the Daeseong Bridge, and the Daedeok Bridge, the artist collected river water, natural water, and trash. He created the impressions of certain phenomena and images he met in the process with watercolor work. In particular, a purification system was devised from the fiction of the ritual for rain in Yongso to purify and collect the river water to use it as a material for watercolors. While following along the river's journey, the artist explored the question of 'What has it washed away?', speculating that the floating matters caught through the purification are also a component of the river, and expressed his view of the course of a river, which has been the center of life.

The artist tried to understand and empathize with artistic research on the places they had lived in. They moved their home and studio from Gwangju to the Eolgeusil village of Changpyeong, Damyang when they had a child. The Eolgeusil village is home to RYU Jongheon, the cultural asset No. 192 of Jeollanam-do and the collection village of RYU, a memorial stone of RYU Ock, who became the spiritual symbol of Joseon Dynasty scholars, as well as headstone and a memorial monument for the academic conference. Based on historical and natural elements, the artist presents the installation work including a painting that adds to the present story and items that contain traces of life as objects. His installation features a rat rock, a cat rock, and a Sajabong peak in Samin Mountain, the symbols of the Eolgeusil.

Samman-ri in Search of Father

The artist, born and raised in Damyang, presents their work which gives a perspective view of the present through an individual's past living in Samman-ri, their hometown. Samman-ri is an area where the Damyang Agricultural Industrial Complex is located and is inhabited by numerous migrant workers from Sri Lanka. Looking into their lives, the history of the artist's father, who went abroad to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia 36 years ago, overlap. They emphasize the importance of the forms of life and labor that are transnationally connected beyond region and place and the importance of its value by looking into the past of the individual (their father). They also tried to find the source for mapping and archive the changes in the boundaries of arable land in order to track the changes in the village.

An artist, who studies modern concept landscape painting based on mountains, says that their research has given them a new understanding of Damyang. The mountains surrounding Damyang have a variety of folk tales, and the stream running through the town boasts a beautiful view with the origin of the Yeongsan River. The work begins with a view from the top of Boriam, where one can see it best. The winding ridges of Chuwol mountain, Gwanyeokbawi mountain, Ahn mountain, Sansung mountain, and Jeonggak mountain surrounding Damyang Lake are embodied as a painting installation in a connotative and abstract expression of the artist's view. Also, the consideration of how to express information through the research into art has been set up to share symbolic and specific scenes collected during the process with visitors.

Inspired by the tale of Jeon Woochi, who studied at the Damyang Yeondong temple, their art presents an installation containing the main images of Damyang. During the research stage, the artist noticed not only the mysterious developments contained in Damyang's numerous tales but also the background of the existence of the place and life. The natural and cultural elements of Damyang are expressed as new places where reality and absurdity coexist through their artistic interpretation. The scenery of the work containing Yongso, the origin of the Yeongsan River, expands into reality and continues to the appearance of Damyang surrounded by mountains on three sides. The typical tower and pavilion of Damyang located as if hidden inside are also expressed in artist YANG Nahee's unique style of painting.

At the research stage, the artist also learned many folk tales, including Yongso, Binnyeobawi, and Jeon Woochi, but paid special attention to the daily lives of the Damyang villagers living in the present rather than focusing on the fiction.
She collected stories and images from the lives of the villagers and residents of the bustling tourist location, where many tourists and visitors come and stay. She is keen on finding the meaning in trivial things, looks into the 'gap' between everyday elements and sheds light on things that even the villagers may have not paid careful attention to. The artist has spent a lot of time highlighting the significance of what others think insignificant in the small, attractive town.
