The exhibition < Empathy Instinct > starts with a simple question of how various social problems in modern society stem from a lack of empathy. Empathy means differently depending on who defines it and on the field of study that uses it, such as aesthetics, philosophy, and psychology. Despite the differences in definition according to which element of this capability is emphasized, the cognitive aspect of empathy has gradually received more attention than the emotional aspect. The exhibition traces this tendency as it explores cognitive elements of empathy and searches for the possibility of universal empathy by finding the element of this capability that sits next to human instinct in our
minds.
Seven artists from Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines participate in this exhibition with works that grow from prolonged reflection on historical and social circumstances of their own countries.
The exhibition < Empathy Instinct > is also about historical trauma through which audiences can contemplate the ways of memory and commemoration regardless of whether or not they experienced those events and are qualified to speak for them. The yearning for communication and sharing different thoughts prompts us to uncover the meanings of those events to our contemporaries. The exhibition was motivated by concerns about the ways of memory and commemoration, and the method of representation of the May 18 Democratization Movement, which marks its 41st anniversary this year. In the process of remembering and commemorating the history through representation and images, a sense of problem in terms of method often emerges. This exhibition intends to reveal the
possibilities for novel ways of artistic representation with cooperative efforts of domestic and international artists to discover meanings those historical events hold in the present. It is an attempt to construct and discover the relationship between the past and the present, and the way that generations who have not experienced the periods of democratization of their countries find significance in those events of chronologically similarity.
The exhibition consists of works containing artistic perspectives on how our society, our generation or the next generation can remember and commemorate historical trauma. It contains not only stories of historical events, but also various messages on grave issues such as the history of violence and human rights. As a non-experienced generation, we explore how, what, and why we should remember and commemorate in terms of the historical trauma and look for ways to fill in the gap of time and experience as mediated by artistic elements.

The artist KIM Jin-nam attends to the irrational realm, focusing on psychological and emotional expression through the combination of humans and water. Through reflection
and projection, which are the characteristics of water, the work captures human emotions
that are difficult to express in language. The < Red Tears > series seeks to confront experiential truth face-to-face with the awareness of the problems about the perceptions of and attitudes toward historical issues, and hopes that the heavy feeling leading to the present situation will be conveyed as it is and transformed to emotional empathy. In addition, the work visualizes the terminological problem of the military sexual slavery by Japan, the historical trauma and the problems of women's rights, as it fragments and dismantles the object, and wishes to wash away the trauma by projecting unreckonable tears. Through understated description, intentional deconstruction, and expression of flow techniques, the work evokes stunning re-sounding and emotional agitation. In particular, < Boundary 1 > presents a character who holds his breath in the water, reflecting the artist himself and a reality that has not yet been resolved, and attempting to elicit empathy by inducing deliberate discomfort and a frustrated sensibility to viewers. It conveys the consciousness of historical trauma, human rights, and historical awareness by implicitly expressing the anger, hurt, sorrow, and Han of the person’s experience, and tries to elicit social empathy through personal empathy.

Erased Slogans_2021

Kiri Dalena, a visual artist, filmmaker and human rights activist, has worked on the issues of political and social injustice brought about by the events of Philippine history. < Black Book of Slogans > is a series linked to < Purple Book >, which was first attempted in 2009, and deals with the situation from March 2020 to March 2021. < Black Book of Slogans > records the slogans used in protests against the government's oppressive politics. It is a record of oppressive controls, unstable systems, and the cries for human rights and freedoms. Printed books are placed on collected chairs of different types and pasts, and are designed so that visitors can sit in the chairs in a roundtable format to read books and share opinions. In addition, the importance of social practice and speech is emphasized by presenting the image of the demonstration site with the slogans removed. The artist raises the issues of the Philippines' past and present through a booklet and continuously updates its contents to propose a protesting gaze to view the country, history, and discrimination through a non-violent method.

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes_2021_monitor, mirror, 5min 20sec, FHD, 300x300x170

Artist SHIN Jae-eun, who has focused on the work of revealing the fundamental order of nature hidden beneath the crust of civilization, presents a work on the subject of becoming an instrument of life through < Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes >. It is molded with the reality in which the labor force, that is, the body, in the modern economic system as well as in history, for goals irrelevant to individual free will and happiness, is ground up in a place where there are no instrumentalized beings. The pig used as an instrumentalized entity here may be an objectified other unrelated to me, but we are also ourselves, who share a genome similar to that of the pig. Our image projected in the mirror and the landscape of urban life is discharged as a shapeless lump from the meat-grinder machine at the back, and this mass becomes a frame and surrounds us. It is a question of where the instrumentalized being comes from and where it goes to. The violence that occurs in human society is the history of resistance and struggle, and < Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes > conveys a dialectic of instrumentalization on how to control and live, in order to reexamine the values of freedom and equality in the current era.

In < Stand Against >, artist LEE Sang-heon, who delves into the subject of personal memories and history that have been unnoticed and forgotten, delivers a message about the will to resist oppression and the will to be free. As part of the generation who experienced the democratic movement in the 1980s, he conveys his beliefs about democracy in everyday life through the image of a giant figure standing firmly against blasts of wind with both legs planted on the ground. In the face of historical trauma, he induces experiential sympathy through < Waiting in Vain > and < Nailed 2 >, and completes the narrative of the works by emphasizing the spirit of resistance when it reaches < Stand Against >. Particularly noteworthy is the self-constructive work method that premises labor and time to the utmost extreme and the artist's attitude, which is identified with the wood. The process of finding value by accumulating time, labor, and worries is revealed intact in the material properties of wood, a natural material, and transcended into a sculpture that reflects the artist's life and inner self. In addition, his work, completed by combining two or three different types of wood, respects and reflects the diversity and individuality of human society. The wood carvings bearing memories and traces of the past as a rough expression of emotions stimulate nostalgia for humans’ primal emotions.

Jomal, who works on creating a new narrative using metaphors and figuration by adapting personal experiences and historical facts, presents a work that casts doubt on the effect of faith on the body through < White Madness >. When visiting the Jeoldusan Martyrs’ shrine, the artist encountered a historical event called “Byeongin Persecution”. Through the story of several martyrs who died with conviction based on faith, the artist explores the sacredness of meaning as an act itself. She takes note of the human attitude of being willing to give up one’s body, acting on faith and belief, even if people are in extreme situations. The artist also recalls that martyrdom has a revolutionary character and is fundamentally a struggle for freedom, emphasizing that it continues in various forms. In particular, the edge of the guillotine expresses numerous stories in a laminated form, and it is expressed as an identity (head), the core of existence, and a tool for the destruction of the past and the collapse of the old system in order that a new era may begin. At the same time, the shredded body (death) suggests that it becomes manure, implying another re-birth, and makes a fundamental reflection that arouses new mental awareness on the situation in which innocent lives are being unjustly sacrificed. The artist emphasizes that actions based on beliefs or faith are justified, but, on the other hand, they must be kept in check, as a condition of blind faith with twisted and distorted extremes can incapacitate another's body.

< The Blue Notebooks II:

< The Blue Notebooks II: The Art of Resonance > is a photo artwork with the theme of ash trees with intense colors. Ash wood is used as a significant material for “life” and “living”, being used for furniture, agricultural implements, and musical instruments. At the same time, it is also a material for tools of oppression and power, such as the military batons of the airborne troops in the May 18 uprising, and the sticks and paddles that were tools of punishment during the Joseon Dynasty. The conflicting symbolism of ash wood can suggest hope and dignity to viewers, but also fear and terror. Reminding ourselves that we can all change our faces according to our own pursuits, we reach out to ask questions and think together for the direction we should make for the community and the common good. Artists in the areas of planning, creation, and literature who sympathize with this endeavor are together attempting to expand its meaning and reshape its forms, inviting visitors into the artwork with 135 pigment- printed photographs. Going beyond appreciation and introspection, the artists suggest a “place” where we together can think about the necessity of solidarity through active engagement with memory and behavioral practice. Rather than forcing one-way sympathy with the major narrative, the work conveys the concept of “we” toward the next generation, which faces the absurdity of everyday life, through the experience of the moment of imagining and resonating as a generation without lived experience of Korea’s recent history of oppression.

This visual work of Chia-Wei Hsu contains historical content from the stories of the artist’s grandmother, who was dispatched to work for a war preparation project by the Japanese government during the Pacific War of World War II. During the period, Taiwan was a major base for Japan's expansionist policy to the south. War ships were anchored and repaired at Taiwan's shipyards, and a new pier was being built to accommodate them. The artist looks at this historical moment from two different perspectives. One is the gaze of the artist's grandmother and the other is the gaze of the artisthimself through a documentary on the Taiwan shipyard of the past. The video traces his grandmother's narration and the appearance of the shipyard at that time. A virtual creation called NI-KU represents the period, forming a virtual narrative and metaphorical representation of political circumstances. It intertwines history, memories, and dreams. Pairings of history and dreams, virtual and physical spaces, reality and fiction constantly overlap. The actual historical events border dream-like imagesas they reflect the shared experiences and collective memories of those who lived throughthattime. The short history of humanitytransforms into a folk tale that a grandmother tellsher grandchildrenat bedtime. As such a story, this work aims to provide a zero-gravity fiction where audiences can rest somewhere between history and dream.
