Our new form of 'solidarity' and its value can be proven by looking at a series of movements that act to bring about change. Some examples of these movements  include the "Me Too" movement, which first appeared in 2018 bringing out the solidarity and support for victims of sexual violence, the ‘Post-it’ movement in colleges worldwide, and various hashtag movements such as #FridaysforFuture and #schoolstrike4climate.
Granted, there is a long history of movements reigning in solidarity across the globe. However, modern day movements differ from the past in the notable lack of social hierarchy and discrimination. This solidarity puts its attention solely on victims rather than on power. There are no positions or titles to be found. All members are connected horizontally, working under the principle of solidarity. Online movements expand to offline protests around the world, and cross-border and racial solidarity takes place. There is no loss of diversity in the collective solidarity because the lines between high and low ranks are blurred and unclear.
The newly emerged form of solidarity is known as organic solidarity, grassroots solidarity or fluid solidarity, reestablishing the importance of solidarity. This exhibition is intended to talk about this new form of solidarity through the works of rising artists who stand at the center of change. It will be an opportunity to check the value of solidarity and imagine what might happen in the future. Furthermore, we hope it will be an exhibition where we can contemplate the possibility of art as a way of practicing peace and demonstration.
Artist KANG Suji describes the new form of solidarity practiced by today’s generation as being Digital Natives. Mobile phones and various online media have made it possible to form solidarity that transcends age, gender, and nationality through the spread of rapid communication and practice of empathy. When a photographer is equipped with the tools of the times, you have access to seeing the strength of our solidarity.
The painting work of artist KIM Eunji tells the story of the motive behind the workings of today’s movements and the emotion beyond solidarity. We would like to consider ways to overcome the limitations of the existing collective through uniting together without losing our individual identities and also extending infinitely beyond the boundaries.
The installation work by JUNG Deokyong, who uses Nogari (young pollack), explores a direction in which he believes future solidarity should move towards. Based on the familiar fish 'pollack' of which is called differently by region and cooking style, the artist wishes to imagine solidarity with others who do not belong to the same group through work using Nogari, a young pollack.
Like the lyrics of the popular song Bulnabi (fire butterfly), we still sing for freedom and happiness, equality and peace. Despite the change in the fundamentals of solidarity, it is still not free from the assumption that it is reckless and useless. It is precarious and unstable, but nevertheless we are trying to just look ahead and walk together. We hope we can live to see the day where our new solidarity can take us to a world mentioned in Blue Sky Wide Field, a work completed by three writers.
