< Are We Linked?

In today's modern society, with the development of science and technology, we are free to move from a physical space to a virtual, online space, and the boundaries between countries and regions are gradually breaking down. As a result, we are at a point where we are constantly connected to something visible or invisible. And to overcome those invisible boundaries, various forms of artistic experimentation are being undertaken.
This online collaboration was curated to examine how space changes by paying attention to locality in the re-recognition of boundaries and what types of reconstruction this may lead to when “trans” (as a new way of crossing boundaries) and “locality,” as a unit, meet the four artists from Gwangju (Korea) and Bacolod (Philippines). The artists have the same origins in common (two from Gwangju, two from Bacolod), but they are currently residing in different cities, including Seoul, Gongju, Gwangju, Bacolod, and Brussels, and are active across regions. Although their physical locations were different, the four artists conducted their first collaboration to connect with each other and express their interpretation of the subject through the virtual space known as “online.” The first video work produced in this manner led to collaboration in which they exchanged their work again at each other's locations, reinterpreting it in their respective expression methods, and adding meaning.
“Are We Linked?” examines the connection point of information and data that we exchange countless times in our daily lives, its beginnings and before, and the series of processes that occur as we cross the boundaries inherent in them.  This collaboration, which began from the concept of “trans-locality,” focuses on the spatiality of the present interpreted by artists in different locations.
The first video collaboration by artists JunJun Montelibano and Joshua Serafin captures the contradictory moments when some information was translated  accurately and others differently into digital images as real images were transmitted across one boundary from one location to another via the internet. Artists Dokyoung Kim and Jisoo Seo, on the other hand, start from the question of whether digital images can be translated back into the real world. They take the elements of empty space, choice of time, and the opportunity to recognize one's own body, with the cursor in a computer as the subject and tell the story of the cursor wanting to be the hand of reality. Through “We Are Linked,” they present their thoughts on the relationship between people and virtual space as well as on identity and independence.
Artists Dokyoung Kim and Jisoo Seo conducted their first collaboration, paying attention to the points where different regions and spaces are connected without limitations through today's online space. Before the start of a connection, through the intersection of artificial images and natural images, at the moment when the cursor blinks on the screen prior to a search – this implies the possibility of numerous connections in everyday life. Artists JunJun Montelibano and Joshua Serafin, who received this collaboration, visually reinterpret the time delay and the void that occurs in transmitting a message between the moment when the data is sent and when the message is virtually delivered. In Panglugayawon (Odyssey), the movement of the body is symbolized as a thinking human before going on a long virtual journey. The graphic lines and patterns that cover the body emphasize the minute moment of hesitation just before one enters data on the keyboard and represent the combined mindset of reality and virtuality.
Even though the world is finitely spread out, aside from the physical time difference, it is connected like an invisible spiderweb through the internet, and the boundaries between regions intersect infinitely. Countless invisible lines run through the world, but sometimes errors occur in the process of establishing connections, and reality is distorted or manipulated. In addition, without being aware, information and images that we have not selected may become entangled and flow with the loss of independence. This exhibition seeks to reflect on one’s own identity in this rapidly changing and moving digital glocal environment through the interpretation of the connections between individuals situated in different locations. We hope that this will be a time to question ourselves again by correctly interpreting and connecting the infinity thrown into modern society. Are we truly linked? (Written by_Yooyoung Park)

Video, 5min25sec

This work contains a story of the relationship between people and virtual space, and their identity.
In the first video collaboration between JunJun Montelibano and Joshua Serafin, the image of the body is translated into the internet and data algorithms by the recipient while being transmitted online, loses its original texture and intention, and becomes manipulated into a digital image that behaves like a body. On the other hand, upon receiving the work, artists Dokyoung Kim and Jisoo Seo, proceed by posing a rather bizarre question: “Can digital images wear texture and enter the real world?”
“We Are Linked,” tells the story of a mouse cursor that wants to become a hand in the Korean artists’ first work. The cursor was chosen as the element that provides an empty space, time of choice, and an opportunity to recognize one's body. The hand possesses the potential to make choices and decisions in everyday life, while the cursor that the hand moves also has the same role as the hand in the cursor’s virtual world. In the beginning of the video, the hand and cursor seem to be completely connected, but as we all know, a cursor is not a hand and can never itself be a hand. The story ends as a happening that stems from the cursor's misunderstanding.
The work is displayed in the exhibition space as a book of continuous images that can be viewed with one’s own hands in physical space and as a video containing the story of a cursor. It gives us time to look again at the relationship between the reality that we live in and the virtual world, and one’s independence.

This work tells the story of a moment of pause in a journey where data and information are created and connected between regions and recipients.
In the first video work, artists Dokyoung Kim and Jisoo Seo focused on the points where different regions and spaces are connected without limitations through today's internet environment. And before the connection is established, it depicts the void moment when the cursor blinks to enter a message or a search word, and the moment when materiality both artificial and natural intersect, revealing the countless possibilities of connection in our lives.
Artists JunJun Montelibano and Joshua Serafin visually express the moment when data is transmitted by reinterpreting it as a time delay, a void, or the time when the message is placed in the virtual world. Panglugayawon is a word in the Hiligaynon language, spoken in the Visayan Islands of Philippines, meaning “long journey” or “odyssey.” In the first video of the Filipino artists, the moving body of the artist is symbolized and reconstructed as a human who thinks about his thoughts before embarking on a long virtual journey. This image is covered with graphic lines and skin tones, and the fingerprint patterns flowing through the body highlight the fleeting moment before one’s fingers touch the keyboard, representing a combined mindset of reality and virtuality

The Video project output is about a communication transferring from a main source of information which is represented by Josh original performance video clips  to a receiver which is represented by me (junjun) through a medium we all use today as the web, or the internet.  The information junjun recieved from Josh is then translated to Junjun’s own version of Josh’s video performance.  The video output translated by Junjun is not the same as the original. The boundaries between Josh and Jun2 are separated by  the internet datas, algorithms, etc..  Somehow our message here is that when we pass on information from one boundary or location to another, through the internet, some information may somehow be translated correctly or differently. it can be manipulated, distorted or abused freely when it is transferred or uploaded into the internet or web. Which is the case these days of the rise of fake news.
The process of our work started with Josh’s performances in video format, it is then transferred to me.  Then i worked on with his original video, and completely changed it into my own version. (Junjun’s Artist Notes)

The artists have made a series of works with themes developed through thoughts gained in life and the objects around them. The artists understand the collaboration as the process of reinterpreting space by transforming the current space into an experience of digital images through online media.
The process of exchanging and developing the works of the artists’ individual thoughts is difficult but interesting. Through collecting the keywords of space, life, and time from each other’s the thoughts, the artists created the collective term “connection point” and worked with that. For the artists, connection point does not suggest connecting the beginning and the end. Rather, connection point conveys the importance of the process itself, not for distinguishing what may be good or bad in the invisible world.
This work, visualized by intersecting artificial images and natural materiality, is intended to be viewed as one superimposed image, evoking your experiences and mine, creating a new experience for a synesthetic space. (Dokyoung’s Artist Notes)

With a single click and a single search, it is now possible to connect and access other areas that are physically imperceptible. These days, there seems to be no limit to the locality that can be encountered in real life as well as in virtual space. Especially in virtual space, as an algorithm calls up another algorithm, we at times encounter a lot of information and images without even realizing it.
“_______ Myriad Links” is a video project that tells the story of the numerous spaces that are connected through a search in virtual space and the blinking moment of the cursor just before entering a search term in the search bar to arrive at those spaces. The speaker typing off-screen compares this moment before connection to empty space, time of choice, and an opportunity to recognize one's own body. At the same time, the images of artificial and natural connections are shown intersecting in the video, implying the possibility of countless connections. The work suggests to start thinking from a space where one can choose rather than from a space of unavoidable complexity. (Jisoo's Artist Notes)
