Observing and Monitoring the Ruins: A Public Sphere Between Disappearance and Emergence

Our memories are bound to particular places, and cities therefore become intertwined with the memories of those who once lived or continue to live there, carrying within them a collective memory. For the citizens of Gwangju, the Jeonnam Textile and Ilshin Textile factories are sites marked by the painful history of exploitation under Japanese colonial rule. At the same time, they symbolize the era of industrialization in Gwangju and the Jeonnam region following liberation, making them places where conflicting feelings of attachment and resentment coexist.
For 86 years, textile machinery operated amid temperatures reaching 40°C and a thunderous roar of the factories, until the machines came to a complete stop in 2020. As of 2026, most of the 27 buildings have been demolished, leaving only a handful of preserved spaces on the now-leveled site. In their place stand enormous cranes and drilling machines, symbols of the mechanisms of capital.
Once a site of production where the grueling labor of countless workers wore down their bodies and brought forth “salt flowers” of sweat, the factories are now being rapidly transformed into a new urban space shaped by capital. Amid this turbulent transition, in which both the function and physical form of the site are being completely altered, we ask: How do the memories and accumulated time of labor that sustained an era relate to the urban landscape of today? What historical realities are disappearing behind the overwhelming noise of development and the barriers surrounding the construction site? What will we choose to preserve and remember?
Faced with the logic of large-scale development, this exhibition uses artistic intervention to reconsider the sense of place of modern industrial heritage as it becomes increasingly privatized and obscured. It proposes the site anew as a public sphere in which space and time can be freely reterritorialized. By tracing the visible and invisible transformations taking place on the ground being demolished, the exhibition gazes upon the ruins and brings future-oriented imagination to the collective memories inscribed within them.

The three participating artists reconstruct the historical and sociocultural significance of the site through multiple sensory layers,, working with installation and sound.
Kang Dong-Ho uses embroidery, pulleys, salt-flower lace, and installations of fabric cracked with wax to give structure to the forces of labor amid demolition and reconstruction. Her work makes visible both the continuity and the lingering tensions between the lives of women workers in the past and labor at present-day construction sites.

An Se-Eun works with temporary partition walls that vibrating with sound and fragmented photographic collages. By overlapping the spatial and temporal dimensions of labor in the former textile factories with those of the present-day redevelopment site, her work brings attention to the value of labor and the memory of the land being concealed beneath smooth surfaces.

BakShim Jung-Hoon summons the voices of two women workers amid the vanished roar of the textile factories and the noise of present-day construction. Through ferrofluid that responds to their voices, the work suggests that attention to and careful listening to memory are what allow the history of a place to endure.

Just as loosely assembled support structures are hidden behind the seemingly solid and complete boundaries of construction-site barriers, beneath the polished surface of the city to come lie the concealed histories of labor and the lives of those who shaped the place.

〈between a and b > focuses on the conditions and relationships of labor amid the cessation of production, dismantling, and reconstruction. Fabric installations bearing embroidered phrases of memory and connected by pulleys and weights structurally reveal the two sides of force: support and burden. The “salt-flower” lace, inspired by the white traces left behind after sweat dries, evokes the continuity of labor through its repeated, layered arrangement. The artist recreates headscarves that women workers might once have worn, intertwining and dyeing them red to reveal narratives of lives woven through with their blood and sweat. Once-flexible fabric is hardened with paraffin wax, and the resulting cracks reflect the traces of tension and wear that remain within the collective and in individual lives as an era undergoes transformation.

The artist considers what continues and what changes as a place takes on a new use, and how those changes remain in individual lives.

BakShim Jung-Hoon, in collaboration with Cho Suyeon, presents , a work that weaves together and visualizes sounds that have disappeared.
Over the present-day noise recorded at the construction site, the work layers sounds that once filled the factory—the roar of textile machinery, whistles, and other sounds—as remembered and expressed through onomatopoeia by two former workers. The artist transforms the significance of the “The Prime Mover” the facility that once supplied power to the entire factory, into the “voices” of two women workers, Kim Bokja and Jeong Misuk, who worked at the site forty years apart.
Only when viewers approach the back of the CRT television and listen closely can they hear the women’s breathing and voices. These sounds activate ferrofluid that responds to their voices, temporarily revealing images of the remaining buildings. Yet the moment attention and listening cease, the ferrofluid spreads again, covering the memories of the place in black. Through the shifting ferrofluid, the artist shows that only sustained listening and attention to memory can serve as the driving force that keeps the history of a place alive.

The former textile factory site in Im-dong, Gwangju, is both a site of modern industrial heritage and an active large-scale construction site being transformed into a mixed-use commercial district. Through sound vibrations and photographic installation, the artist explores the history of labor and the temporality of place that are being obscured behind the smooth surfaces of development.

The sound installation  collects and layers the noise of construction at the site with the roar of the Toyota Type G Automatic Loom, once used by the textile company during the Japanese colonial period, bringing sounds from different eras together as a single vibration. Just as the outer casing of a machine conceals its internal mechanisms, the tall barriers surrounding the construction site block from view both the work taking place beyond them and the layers of past labor.
A temporary wall cutting across the center of the exhibition space functions as a resonating body, transmitting sound as physical vibration through vibration speakers and exciters. Moving between its front surface, finished with paint and paper, and its exposed structural framework at the back, viewers encounter both surface and internal structure. The vibrating wall brings them face to face with the time of laboring bodies and the memory of the land that will eventually be concealed behind the finished surfaces of the new buildings.

The photographic installation < 26.07.16. Im-dong > consists of images of crane frames, construction barriers, and the sky above the former factory site, printed on A4 paper and assembled across the wall. The gaps left between the sheets evoke a sense of the land’s yet-to-arrive future and the air rights above it. These images are juxtaposed with photographs of women workers operating high-speed warping machines in the past, overlaying the diagonal lines of past textile production with the cables of present-day cranes. By montaging the lines and divisions of these two periods, the artist uses photography to intersect the spatial and temporal dimensions of past and present.
Beginning their research on the three historical incidents, Kang Sooji and Lee Hayoung visited the sites of ongoing “oppression,” “uprising,” and “struggle.” As a commonality found at various protest sites, they focused on “food” as a symbol of solidarity of care and sharing. Der Giftpilz reminds us that traumatic incidents are not simply history to be remembered and commemorated, but are reproduced in various segments of society in different forms of violence and oppression. Cosmic Material – Mushroom, which can be found throughout the exhibition hall, is a collection of mushroom sculptures made of aluminum foil, an everyday material, focusing on aluminum, which is a representative material that can go into space. The process of transforming insignificant material into solid sculptures sheds light on the value of hope that ordinary people create.
