The Cycle series is a co-creation project between artists from two culturally distinct regions: Gwangju in South Korea and Bacolod in the Philippines. From 2016 to the present, this collaboration has gone through various transformations, such as exchange residencies, online collaborations, and workshops between the two regions to pursue situational responses and alternative transformations.
Based on research on the two cities of Gwangju and Bacolod, the participating artists have expanded their understanding of contemporaneity through trans-regional communication and collaboration. In addition, the concept of accompaniment and collaboration between artist and artist as well as artist and curator, which encompasses the meaning of systemic experimentation, has developed through regular meetings to record and discuss the process of the series and to reach a consensus.
Cycle 009 began in August with one-on-one matching and online communication for collaborative works, looking into each other’s worlds and finding topics of common interest. In early October, the Korean artist went on a research trip to Bacolod to deepen knowledge of the subject and conduct field research, and at the end of October, the Philippine artist took her research trip to Gwangju. From the results of these trips their co-creation has derived.
As the first result of the process, Ho Bin Kim and Brandon Braza have created Encased Narrative: From Gwangju to Bacolod, based on their childhood experiences of living in different countries, their concerns about identity in social consciousness, including life as a queer artist, and their common interest in community relationships. The collaborative installation conveys a joint narrative of the oppressive structures faced by both artists as they interpret the other’s life in their respective socio-cultural environments. It is hoped that this will provide an opportunity to share alternative imaginings of how to address inequality in contemporary society.

Encased Narrative: From Gwangju to Bacolod is a visualization of the cultural exchange between Ho Bin Kim and Brandon Braza, who live in Gwangju, South Korea and Bacolod, Philippines, respectively. At the center of the exhibition are two major installations, each representing one artist’s interpretation of the other’s life within their own cultural landscape. It originates from the traditional Filipino pastime of spider fighting (Pahibag Damang / Let Spiders Fight).
The Fuego matchbox, which was traditionally used as an item for hunting and storing spiders, contains a video work by Ho Bin Kim that explores queerness, identity, and its intersection with the Bacolod tradition of spider hunting and fighting. Another box is a representation of the choco-pie box, a symbol of military culture and a place to hide intimate things, where objects collected by Brandon Braza take the form of spiders. Inspired by the traditional way of storing spiders, the box, which is divided into several compartments, contains objects that symbolize current social issues such as discrimination and hatred, gender inequality, LGBTQ orientations, and labor.
Encased Narrative: From Gwangju to Bacolod conveys a collective narrative of the oppressive structures each artist faces in their societies, beyond personal exchanges. The objects and videos invite the viewer to engage in a conversation about identity, resilience, and the complex connections between culture, tradition, and contemporary existence.
