Freedom Crisis: Beyond the Loop

Kim Seonyoung
(Director of OverLab., Independent Curator)

Why is it so hard for our society to escape from similarly repeating historical patterns? This exhibition started from the parallel theory of history that maintains that history repeats itself in similar ways. The repeated desire for power is still effectively operating in the present, and it is expected that the present can be examined through the past.
In the present, when time seems to fly backwards, we have explored through this exhibition the history of violence for the sake of freedom and democracy in this era.
The three incidents of April 3 in Jeju, October 19 in Yeosu–Suncheon, and May 18 in Gwangju, in which the state was the perpetrator of violence, were all too similar.
As we witnessed the violence and deaths inflicted on so many individuals, we had to question the very nature of human beings due to the cruelty and horror of the violence.
The active actions of those on the periphery, in addition to those in power, have resulted in a more brutal situation. The tragedy has repeated itself because of ideological conflicts, lust for power, acquiescence and participation beyond the banality of evil, and the loss of ethical  standards of judgment.
The resistance forces, who used to be called “communist forces” or “violent subversive forces,” are now called “anti-state forces” and are still resisting. History repeats itself like this, and we are still in the darkness of the times.
We share different imaginations about the unknown victims instead of hero-centered historical narratives. Numerous victims indicate that their struggles were for survival rather than for resistance to ideology and the system.
In April and June, at the historical sites in Jeju, Yeosu, and Suncheon, we reached the same conclusion: “Those who killed and those who saved are all the same people.”
Facing the three incidents for which martial law was declared as a state of national emergency, we have tried to examine freedom in its current state of emergency in which it is regressing and also to imagine a world where democracy soars as everyday democracy.
While living in tune with the flow of the world, can it be possible for us to escape from this orbit by being aware of this with keen insight and by retaining a spirit of resistance? We need to become a glimmer of light and find creative ways to make a better world.
Through this exhibition, we hope that many people will continue to reflect on the past, constantly seeking ways to prevent the recurrence of violence and contemplating methods of minimal resistance.

Cho Jeoungtae’s People Who Became Stars series contains the concept of a requiem for remembrance and sublimation of the memories of tragic history. The wooden coffin, the mat, and the ritual model boat – all of which symbolize various funeral customs – float in the air of an unfamiliar landscape and represent transcendence. The unfamiliar landscape is a form of embodied desire and is an attempt toward a new interpretation of the subject by bestowing the emotions of the principal agent into the appearance of nature. By calling out the names of those who have disappeared into obscurity as countless stars, he offers comfort, imbued with wishes and prayers. By reminding us of death, he evokes reflection on the present life, leaving a profound resonance.

Lim Namjin’s Letter Series is attempting infinite changes and expansions. This manifests itself as a color-centered abstraction that focuses on emotional feelings. She searches for and reveals the traces of wounds, and focuses on the inner world to discover their essence. This is a work that requires a lot of painful patience as it goes through the stages of deep understanding, respect, and recognition of material properties. The various emotional lines focusing on many individuals’ trauma, which have been left unexposed behind the related incident, add depth to the colors and are revealed as a formativeness that explores the essence of the painting. As the heavy colors of emotion convey a sad poetic sensibility, a ray of hope toward light stands out.

Kim Hyundon conveys critical thoughts on the structure of desire and power through Reason. The form with repeated movements constantly repeats upward and downward movements, creating a phenomenon of reversing top and bottom. This represents a will to lift up the hope beneath the surface and make it spring forth, and the threads containing messages of the three historical incidents are connected in all directions. In addition, Kim emphasizes the necessity for a shift in the human-centered perspective through video that starts from space and zooms in and out on the Earth and the points of the three incidents. In a time when victims are often turned into perpetrators, depending on desire and gain, Kim conveys thoughts on the structures of violence recurring throughout society and on human dignity.

Beginning their research on the three historical incidents, Kang Sooji and Lee Hayoung visited the sites of ongoing “oppression,” “uprising,” and “struggle.” As a commonality found at various protest sites, they focused on “food” as a symbol of solidarity of care and sharing. Der Giftpilz reminds us that traumatic incidents are not simply history to be remembered and commemorated, but are reproduced in various segments of society in different forms of violence and oppression. Cosmic Material – Mushroom, which can be found throughout the exhibition hall, is a collection of mushroom sculptures made of aluminum foil, an everyday material, focusing on aluminum, which is a representative material that can go into space. The process of transforming insignificant material into solid sculptures sheds light on the value of hope that ordinary people create.
