현대사회는 국가의 경계가 모호해졌다고 해석해도 무방 할 만큼 여러 문화가 혼재된 삶을 살고 있다. 특정국가의 문화가 유입되어 기존의 문화가 잠식되어 심각하게는 문화적 사회적 점령을 야기하는 일종의 문화침략이 만연해 있고, 한편으로는 다양한 문화교류를 통해 견문과 문화수준이 향상되기도 하며 동등한 협력관계로 정보, 기술 등의 분야에 발전을 가져오기도 한다. 회화작업을 일삼는 서영실, 카리나 브로스 두 작가는 이러한 현대사회의 문화 정체성에 대한 고민을 나누며 보이지 않지만 복잡하게 옭아 메어진 동시대의 문화에 대한 이야기를 건넨다. 대부분의 아시아 국가는 식민시대의 경험으로 인한 사회문화적 지배의 역사를 가지고 있다. 이를 현대사회의 문화침략 역사의 시발점이라고 바라보는 두 작가는 외세로 인해 유입되거나 강압되었으나 현재는 너무나도 자연스럽고 당연한 요소들을 오브제로 차용한 설치작품을 선보인다.

An array of cultures are intermingled in contemporary society and the borders among nations have become blurred. A country’s culture is often encroached on by an inflow of other cultures. We can refer to it as a cultural invasion. Meanwhile, such diverse cultural exchanges help enhance the level of one’s culture, at times bringing about evolvement in the fields of information and technology through equal cooperative relations.

The two artists exchange their views on how cultures of their time are interwoven each other, sharing their considerations of cultural identity in contemporary society. Most Asian countries have a history of being colonized and overshadowed by other cultures. They see such colonial rule as a departure point of a cultural invasion. They put on display an installation that adopts the elements that were coerced by foreign powers but are presently considered quite natural objects.
