Cycle for the Next

A prolonged pandemic beyond anyone’s expectations has brought about many changes in all areas of life. Our old memories are becoming dimmer in our daily lives. Now we seem to be accustomed to living with excessive fatigue due to masks, quarantine guidelines, and regulations.
The world of art is also shrinking in large part due to the prolonged pandemic, but movements to find new alternatives are still ongoing. Since 2014, OverLab has continued a co-creative artist residency under the theme of "Cycle," starting with an exchange exhibition with the city of Bacolod in the Philippines. However, as international exchanges have been practically impossible since 2020, non-face-to-face co-creative exhibitions have been planned through online collaboration employing video media. Through this, we have been able to get a peep at  the direction of international art exchanges and the possibility of collaborative exhibitions.

In this non-face-to-face collaboration, four Gwangju and Bacolod artists  started an online conversation, discussing their works and interests and sharing topics they have wanted to deal with in the present era. Although so many things seemed to be different, non-face-to-face collaboration began by setting a common theme, a theme that arose from having the same concerns. Artists from both countries collaborated to create a video work that reached deeper into the theme of the original collaboration. The exchange between the Gwangju and Bacolod artists has lead to a co-creation that the artists reinterpreted at their own sites and added expression in their own way.

Cycle for the Next asks what attitudes and perspectives we should have for the next generation and the future, from the present generation's views on the cycle of survival, life, death, and repeated life. Dealing with present-day life and issues, as viewed and diagnosed by these artists who have experienced a global pandemic, Cycle for the Next intends to reveal a new horizon for future lives through the messages within.
With the title of Absolute Truth, which started from research on the subject by four writers, Ji-soo Seo and Eun-sol Cho arrived at different conclusions on the same issues when encountering online articles and comments, From this, they envisioned a video work depicting confusion that arises when people face opinions without knowing the truth. Artists Daryl Feril and Asen Baldevia, expand meaning by collecting a number of opinions and reconstructing video by adding questions that imply the ability to discern between true or false information when looking at social issues.
Daryl Peril and Aeson Baldevia expressed the double standards for the absolute truth of right and wrong, based on the word halong ("take care"), which implies both safety and threat in today's Philippines. Upon receiving this, artists Seo and Cho pay attention to the narrative in which the actual event is the background during the process of interpreting each image and add to the process of discovering clues about it. This is physically implemented so that it can be viewed indirectly through the video recording, while the clues can be found directly.

In spite of the global pandemic, various attempts are being made to enjoy a high quality of life beyond the limits of physical distance due to the development of digital environments and technologies around the world. But amid a flood of information, we still live in an age of uncertainty, not knowing what to believe. Perhaps the explanation for this lies in the link to a cycle that continues to repeat itself. In this cycle, we must constantly look at and plan for the future, based on the past and the present. We hope that artists living in different environments in Korea and the Philippines will be able to look into the process of collaborative creation that has been contemplated and expanded in meaning and consider "the Next," which implies coincidences and uncertainties.  (Written by_Yooyoung Park)

This work contains the process of ‘Halong Bacolod’, a word and message that confused Filipino artists, and inflated and distorted through online searches by Korean artists. The video begins with the Filipino artists’ first work, in addition, it shows the process of collecting information online and the data they have collected.

‘Halong Bacolod’, which appears in the first video by Filipino artists, is a phrase used in a campaign in Bacolod, Philippines that prays for the safety and well-being of citizens during the COVID-19 crisis, and is also part of the phrase found in a murder that took place in the area. On the other hand, this phrase has become subject to the imagination and speculation of Korean artists because they do not know the language. The Filipino artists’ first video does not contain the exact meaning of ‘Halong Bacolod’ or detailed information about the murder, but it does provide some clues. These clues have motivated Korean artists to search online for more information about ‘Halong Bacolod’. In the process of finding the meaning of Halong, information on the area of Bacolod, the murders, etc., the information gradually gets changed with new images, texts, or the process itself are discovered. The exaggerated information includes translation errors and sometimes information that is not related to the search. What people want to know becomes unclear, and distorted truths are mixed in with the actual truth.

In the exhibition hall, the information contained in the video appears as icons and is displayed through the computer screen along with the video. Visitors can click on the icon to see the details. The exhibition makes visitors imagine the meaning of ‘Halong Bacolod’ and the related event through the information gathered without verification while browsing the material on the screen. The story told by the two Filipino artists and their perspectives is subjected to more interpretation as visitors lend their own perspectives thus making the truth less clear.

We live in a time were outrage and hardening cultural divides flood social media. Every second of every day, an increasing number of real-time discussions flashes our screens, which provides an occasionally troubling window into our thinking. Even the possibility of posts going viral, it’s impossible to avoid the storms of opinions that overwhelm social media feeds and cover factual, authentic news stories.

In this collaboration exchange with Philippines and Korean artists, Aeson Baldevia & Daryl Feril affix anonymous commentaries on relevant issues from their home country into the initial work of Korean artists’ Eunsol Cho & Jisoo Seo as part of the program’s second work.

The final work of this collaboration features a single-channel video projection on building with the combined work of the 4 artists. The first half of the video art are social media statements flashing in an exchange commentary order discussing current unspecified issues relevant in South Korea which then shifts to the second part of the video, an exchange of conversations from Filipino netizens discussing unspecified issues relevant in the current state of the Philippines in a form of two opposing blocks. The audience as spectators will try to decipher the information flashing on the screen and figure out what issues are being discussed and weigh which of the statements are true based on their collective personal experiences.
