The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about changes in all aspects of our lives. It prolonged status has caused delay in museums, exhibitions, biennales, and conferences, and a shift toward virtual presentations and events is more noticeable.
Until now, the international exchange residency and exhibition exchange between Gwangju (Korea) and Bacolod (Philippines) has been within the private sector. This was the compilation of first-hand experience of the local culture, communication with the local artists, and creative experimentation based on research. However, the pandemic brought a sudden halt to this exchange, and now we are faced with the question how we can continue to engage in creative work where face-to-face communication is not possible.
This trial exhibition began with a troubled mind over the new course and direction of international art exchange in a post-COVID-19 era. The process of communication through diagnosis and thought-sharing between artists of both parties became the starting point of cooperation.

The “Way of Survival” Exhibition depicts the present-day difficulties we face as artists or individuals. As advances are made in digital platforms, limitations caused by physical distance are decreased and access to virtual environment is naturally rising. Taking advantage of this new medium, Jayi Kim, Sul Park, Raymond Legaspi, and Manny Montelibano collaborate in this creative experiment to display the reality that artists see in two different frames of reference.
Jayi Kim and Sul Park utilize landscape and scenery where forest, mountain, and water overlap, to portray a new relationship with man and nature. They are trying to deliver a message of healing and relaxation for oneself. Manny Montelibano and Raymond Legaspi borrow the eyes of two security cameras: one in a crowded supermarket on a busy day, the other completely vacant. They remind us of the reality we are in – helpless, controlled by nation and nature.
The two frames of reference, Korea and Philippines, undergo a process of exchange, inspiration, and interpretation, and finally converge and overlap as one frame.

We have always been living in different environments. However, as artists of the same generation, the question of how we should manage and perceive the present remains the same. We may not know how long it will be until we can travel freely, we hope that the stories we depict – life and survival in the eyes of others – become a moment to cherish. (Written by_Yooyoung PARK)

Our lives have been greatly changed by COVID-19. Human contact is greatly restricted in our daily routines; however, this has become an opportunity to reexamine our lives with greater emphasis on ourselves. As I stepped away from my busy daily routine and care more for myself, I began to realize that this time of rest may be what we need more than anything else. Just like we receive healing through green nature, nature will also need rejuvenation.
Jayi Kim’s forest, symbolizing rest, and Sul Park’s black mountains and water, symbolizing the individual, overlap to represent a new relationship between man and nature. The psychological and physical gap between individuals that we have experienced during this pandemic has become an opportunity that brings man and nature closer to each other.
When we need healing in our lives, we turn to nature. Similar to how our ancestors travelled through nature and appreciated it in their works, I hope that you feel relieved of fatigue and find peace of mind through “Restful Scenes.”

The Covid 19 pandemic brought the country and most of the world interrupted and our lives suddenly placed in tremendous uncertainty. There is no Covid 19 pandemic play book. There are a lot of misinformation and fear. Government imposed unclear restrictions and closures. Conflicting reports.
All we can do is stay safe and watch. The execution is using a supermarket CCTV footage. The video will show a story of Uncertainty of Survival.  Life interrupted. CCTV, a way of looking from afar. To see but unseen. A non-face-to-face. A form of security, to see, to know, to be informed. And viewing a cctv has a feeling of a "wait-and-see" what happens. Maybe something will happen, maybe nothing.
A supermarket cctv in a loop showing a busy day and then a day with no activity. With customers and non. A supermarket open for business then suddenly closed. Sound of a booming market then silence. An ambulance siren from afar and the same uncertain feeling we have now.
All we can do is stay safe and watch.
