In the beginning of the winter of 2019, downtown Gwangju was covered with redevelopment and construction sites. The city's exterior underwent many changes by the logic of capital and development and desire. If the time, place, and life of the processes aren’t remembered correctly, they will not only be lost in the new appearance of Gwangju but they will also not be known to generational gaps who were not present for the fall and redevelopment of the city center. Wolsan-dong is called 'Dalmoe (Hill of Moon) Village', because it is round and virtuous like a moon and it is also a place where one can go to greet the moon. However, the once tranquil Dalmoe Village in Wolsan-dong has also spiralled into a vortex of change.
< Wolsan Blues; Overturned City > began in recognition of its disappearance, fundamentally blocking the commercialization of works within the structure of capitalism and the critical sense of material civilization. In the city where the mobility and capital mechanism of the city space are extreme, the exhibition would like to reveal the social and political implications contained in the 'space' of the city in which is closely related to human life. Holding a critical eye to the deprivation of habitation and the collapse of the local community, the exhibition aims to portray the audience's appreciation in a phenomenological way by juxtaposing the demolition site and the remaining remnants left unscaved, through the exploration of the remaining usefulness of empty space and neglected structures.
Wolsan-dong, which was referred to as the last remaining shantytown, has lost many alleys and the village's original appearance suffers due to development-related problems caused by the rise of land prices and the influx of speculators from the redevelopment.
The traces of life such as abandoned toys can be found in the piles of debris, which suddenly make us wonder how the little kids at the corner house were able to carry on. As if to leave the scattered memories behind and counter the universal prejudice of areas near redevelopment, the significance of 'the preciousness of daily life' and 'togetherness' is still lived on through the residents building up the community. We think again about the value of life and the meaning of happiness as we watch them cultivating abandoned land and potted plants, feeding street cats, cultivating the community fields in the town, and sharing lunch.
Overthrow. The overturned city or the life full of happiness. Through the exhibition < Wolsan Blues; Overturned City >, we wanted to look at the present cycle and transformation of places through artistic records of memories of the fluxional city. We hope that it turns out to be an opportunity to reminisce and to realize the bleak potential of cultural loss together amid the rubble of the extinct. Last but not least, we reiterate UNESCO's principle of 'preserving the topography, the path, the urban lots, and the form of life' of the historical village. (Written by_Seonyoung Kim)

Due to the huge capital, the city's topography and environment are phased out, and basic human needs as well as self-judgment are often marginalized by the loss of control. KIM Hyundon's work, which contains concerns about residents' rights to self preservation, utilizes an image that depicts the communal will of Dalmoe villagers. The installation of < Reason-Recursiveness > captures three of the entrances to the village by utilizing natural objects collected from toys, ornaments, and debris that were abandoned during moves. The collected objects present questions about materialism and consumerism, messages about time paradoxes and memories, and the meaning of salvation to dream of a better life in a devastated place.

Artist YOO Jiwon works on the city's story about invisible values and traces, and focuses on abandoned space and memories. An abandoned space is a specific place where memories are deposited, showing the force of time that makes existence futile. The artist chose an abandoned house missing owners and a location that sheds light on the traces of other people's lives in the place. The artist's performance video footage was taken at the construction site in Wolsan-dong in the same area. The artist spoke "The aesthetic of the ruins is not to read the identity of the community as a consistent history or to speak of one's past in a state of aesthetic memory. It is an experience of being one with the absence of a story that has been broken into pieces and is no longer recoverable.”

LEE Sehyun, an artist who throws stones at the backdrop of social and historical sites, is a resident of Wolsan-dong and has been recording Wolsan-dong since before its redevelopment. < episode# Wolsan > records the history of Wolsan-dong on the walls of the village by repositioning the fragmented and recorded images of the city and showing the impact of the changes over time. The project is aimed at demonstrating the change of a place through daily images, concentrating against the uniformization of places and the human alienation caused by reckless urban development. It overlaps nostalgia, for a place filled with stories of ordinary everyday people, and the feeling of warmth t\that stems from being with others in an alleyway. The work is 'progressive' and will be transformed with the appearance of the village until the end of the exhibition, then changes will be added to show that the future will face even greater changes.

Fragmented Landscape

Artist YANG Nahee's < Snowy Wolsan >, which consists of a combination of recycled corrugated cardboard and traditional oil painting methods, features a landscape in Wolsan-dong that is no longer in existence. In her work featuring the shantytown and redevelopment sites across the country, one can experience warm village landscapes as the living foundation. < Fragmented Landscape >, which is a work interpreted with space, questions the issue of countless amounts of trash produced by reckless development for the interests of capital. It also reminds us of the precious value that should not be forgotten in the disintegrating and disappearing Wolsan-dong. The installation of the landscape of Wolsan-dong was created by dismantling a discarded paper box, and it shows the process of disintegrating the village where the living foundation was once full of warmth. < Fragmented Landscape > is in a small room of an empty house, which aims to restore the place’s former glory by recycling ‘massively discarded materials’, which is a similar principle in the modern consumer society.

Wolsandong-The Layer of Memory

Artist SUL Park, who is absorbed in research on landscape painting with modern ideas and using light and dark shades of ink to create art, introduced < Wolsandong-The Layer of Memory > by collecting and reconstructing wasted and scattered memories. For over ten years, artist SUL Park has been working at his studio in Wolsan-dong. His studio’s unwavering appearance has contributed significantly to the warmth in the village, and now he is presenting his installation works to bring out those daily memories from the wreckage. By locating the wasted and scattered memories to a secluded room in a long-empty house, he wishes goodbye to the collection that could be of last use. The various traces of life collected from waste debris lead to the reason and practice of recycling them after the process of excavation, collection, relocation, and packaging. This can be interpreted as a kind of desire to add warm memories to the future of Wolsan-dong, which is destined to turn into a standardized apartment landscape.

Artist KIM Jayi presents a fragmentary image of Wolsan-dong through a remarkable work centered by ‘potted crops’ and the ‘empty house’, showing the character of the residents. It is an exploration on a space losing its utility, function, and purpose to large construction projects. The artist interprets the space, which can be regarded as a historic site in the same era, by collecting items of the residents’ daily lives through exchange and arranging them as if they were antiquity. The exchange as a device for active participation of the residents is intended not only to collaborate and communicate but also as a way to make everyday art; reviving and visualizing their memories through objects that contain the lives of residents. It also seeks to find ways to stabilize and rest through ecological cyclical behavior in the life form of villagers with cultivations of crops such as taro, pumpkin, and green onion using abandoned land and pots. The artist’s true spirit of responding to the devastation of the place, which was a place of life, is pervaded in a different image during the day and night.
