Being genuinely connected with another is one of the most beautiful parts of living. It is an energy exchange between two souls that has the power to deepen a moment, inspire change, and build trust. In a joint artistic effort, fine artist Katarina Estrada and sculptor Yeoungjun Jeon have come together to create “Spark]”, a piece composed of various moving parts and designed to visually and interactively communicate this truth.
The work is made of two, three-foot accordions designed to meet in the middle using a simple pull-and-release mechanism that allows for expansion and collapse. This will also trigger a light to switch on (that famed “spark” between two people) which will illuminate rippling sinews and golden fingers reaching out to another as the two accordion ends meet. The premise for the piece is in its need for two people to simultaneously operate the piece in order for it to work; a shared memory etched in time between two separate individuals. As in all relationships whether romantic or platonic, an equal give and take between souls is a must in order to form a real lasting connection despite this modern world’s daily distractions.
